Your journey starts at Wallingford Station and heads the 2.5 miles through the South Oxfordshire countryside to Cholsey. Once the Guard has given the green flag and the driver sets off, we soon come to the By-Pass Crossing, where the barriers come down stopping the traffic – do give the waiting cars and trucks a wave as we pass. Soon you may hear the train give a warning whistle as we cross the small gated Winterbrook Crossing before we head past the gravel lakes on the lefthand side. Look out for a variety of wildlife using the lakes.
After the lakes you may notice one of our lineside P’ Way huts on the left with the remains of an old water tower nearby, as the views widen out across the fields either side
Another train whistle indicates the gated farm crossing at Green Lane followed shortly by another of our lineside huts on the left before the long straight towards Church Bridge. Look out the righthand windows for views across to the Wittenham Clumps in the distance, and walkers on the footpath next to the track here also like a friendly wave.
After the last of the lineside huts and passing under Church Bridge, the church of St Mary’s is now clearly visible on the righthand side where the famous author Agatha Christie is buried. Agatha was a resident of Wallingford from 1934 until her death in 1976 and is buried along with her archaeologist husband Max Mallowan. The church yard is a pleasant 15-minute stroll on footpaths from our destination of Cholsey Station if you wish to visit.
Leaving the church, the line starts to rise up Cholsey Bank, you may hear the steam engine working harder as we climb up towards Cholsey Station and soon we arrive in Platform 5.
Feel free to step off the train to stretch your legs or capture some memorable photographs of the engine as it runs round the train before we embark on our return journey to Wallingford. We will be at Cholsey for around 10 minutes. Please remain attentive as trains pass on the mainline, keeping behind the yellow line and away from the platform edge and do listen out for the sound of the Guard's whistle. We wouldn't want to accidentally leave anyone behind!
