City

The Great Western Loco “City” class no: 3440 'City of Truro' is to visit the Bunk Line this weekend. She will be hauling trains on the Saturday and Sunday.

Built at Swindon Works in May 1903 its most astonishing achievement was in May 1904 when hauling a train of ocean mails from Plymouth to London the magic “ton” was exceeded as the train descended a gradient at Whitball in Somerset reaching a claimed top speed of just over 102 mph.

There will be regular departures throughout the weekend, although they may not be at the usual times.

This is the second time we have been lucky enough to welcome such a famous locomotive. The photographs show her visit in 2005.

By kind permission of the National Railway Museum York and our thanks to Andrew Goodman for his contribution.
